The Color Red

by

Katherine Montgomery.

Katherine’s background includes weaving, spinning and dyeing.  She has been dying fiber off and on for years mostly out of curiosity about what color her garden plants would yield.  A few years ago, she moved from a farm in western Kentucky back to the Pittsburgh suburbs and left her dye pots behind, after deciding that acid dyes were easier and more reliable.  But a friend asked for help in learning about natural dyeing, and before she knew it, they had both signed up for the MAIWA natural dye class online.  From that class and four subsequent ones, she gained a rigorous approach to natural dyeing that made it more reliable and repeatable both for cellulose and protein fibers. Now the acid dyes only come out when she wants quick and easy results.

Katherine’s presentation will be in-person and members will also be able to join via zoom.

As always, we will be gathering at Lake FarmPark for this presentation, and you are encouraged to bring any items you have been working on to share with others.

At the last meeting Karen announced the 2025 President’s Challenge is to create a series of work that illustrates your own personal evolution in the fiber arts.  She now offers an alternative:

2025 President’s Challenge 2.0 “Secret Codes”

She adds: for those of you uninspired by my initial 2025 challenge of creating a series of work that illustrates your own personal evolution in the fiber arts, I offer a fun alternative: embed a coded message in your work!  Morse code, colors, special symbols – wherever your heart takes you to make your work have an extra layer of personal meaning.  Here’s a few links to pique your interest: Knitting, Codes, and Espionage Through the Ages – Tim O’Neill Studio  and Hidden Messages in Textile Art – Australian Textile Artist | Cathy Jack Coupland

April Meeting will be a presentation by Laura Martin on Mayan Textiles
