August Guild Meeting on Tuesday, August 26th
Optics and Illusions: Exploring Visual Phenomena in Digital Weaving
by Trey Gehring
This program focuses on the presenter’s explorations of optical effects within digital weaving drawing on his experience working on single thread control looms and use of industrial power looms. Topics of discussion will include the use of optical blending to create loom-controlled color effects such as through the use of jacquard tapestry structures and the use of specialized software to create woven autostereograms, sometimes referred to as “magic eyes.” The presenter will bring with him woven samples of these techniques to accompany explanations of the methods used including the jacquard tapestry weave structure. The presentation is designed to interest even beginning weavers while aiming to provide enough information to bring something new or interesting to even the most experienced weavers.
Trey Gehring is a textile artist that uses a variety of techniques in his work including weaving and crochet. He studied under Janice Lessman-Moss, a pioneer in the world of digital fine art weaving, at Kent State University where he completed both a bachelors and masters in fine arts in textile arts. His works occupy an intersection of digital tools and traditional craft skills and frequently explore themes of identity, gender, and queerness. His work has been shown nationally and internationally. Formerly an instructor at Kent State University, he has transitioned into working full time as a mental health professional but maintains an art practice through which he continues to explore ideas and techniques of interest to him.
The August meeting will also include a vote on a clarification of the RAAM program as detailed in the June meeting minutes, so please visit the posted minutes prior to the meeting. If you are having trouble accessing the website, let Karen know (karen.gerken@gmail.com). In addition, we will be appointing the Nominating Committee and recruiting the Budget and Audit Ad Hoc committees. Looking forward to seeing you then!
As always, we will be gathering at Lake FarmPark for this presentation, and you are encouraged to bring any items you have been working on to share with others.
